Planned Parenthood pays the Price

Women standing with Planned Parenthood have been afraid for their health since president-elect Donald Trump was elected into office, but fears quadrupled as he nominated a controversial health and human services secretary, Tom Price.

While many oppose the services that Planned Parenthood provide, what is often overlooked are the simple health practices being provided to women across the country that have nothing to do the the anti-abortion and pro-abortion rights movements. The role of the health and human services secretary is to provide essential human services, especially for those who are least able to help themselves, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Now that Tom Price is our next potential czar of health in the United States, Planned Parenthood prepares for war in its fight against the radical views of our new secretary and recently elected president.

It is no secret that many disapprove of Planned Parenthood simply for the fact that it provides birth control and abortions to those who feel the need to use their services. Women joked before Trump was elected about stocking up on pills and getting intrauterine devices (IUDs), which is a form of birth control that is implanted into the body, before they are taken away. The loss of contraception is no longer just a joke, it has become real life.

Price spoke on the topic on September 18, 2016 when the House voted to end taxpayer funding towards the organization and said, “I voted to end taxpayer funding for the organization (Planned Parenthood) responsible and add criminal penalties in the event of born alive abortions.

The fact is, yes, Planned Parenthood does provide abortions when requested. But, let us not forget all of the other services that it offers women in need. They provide services to those incapable of providing it for themselves. Planned Parenthood contributes information on pregnancy, relationships, body image, sexuality, men’s and women’s health, along with several forms of birth control, STD testing and just health care in general.

According to Planned Parenthood, of all services provided to those around the country, only three percent goes to abortions. While on the other hand, 42 percent goes towards STIs/STDs and 34 percent toward contraception. People are losing sight of the sole purpose of the organization; to help men, women and families PLAN for PARENTHOOD.

Price’s views on women’s health go beyond just personal opinions when he opposed a law that would potentially protect women in the workplace from being discriminated against for their decisions to use birth control or have abortions. Not only that, but Price also co-sponsored legislation that would define life as beginning right at conception and would potentially constitute many common forms of birth control as a weapon of murder.

We will not go back to a time when women lost access to healthcare, and we will continue to stand strong as we continue the fight of our lives against the healthcare that is being threatened to be stripped of so many.

In the event that it does, we would be taking a giant step backwards for not only womankind, but all kind, as Planned Parenthood cares for all those in need of its assistance. Let Planned Parenthood do what it set out to do: Help men and women adequately prepare for parenthood.
