Cyndi Lauper: Girls just want to have fun
Tuned+in
Sydney Walker

Growing up, Cyndi Lauper had a difficult time and when she was 17, she ran away to escape an abusive household. For a while, she was homeless and living on the streets, but eventually made her way to Vermont. While in Vermont, she lived in a youth hostel and Lauper claims that Vermont saved her. Soon enough, she got her GED, took art classes at Johnson State College, and supported herself by working odd jobs for a while.
Before her singing career took off, one of her many jobs was singing covers of songs at an assortment of places. But, this ultimately led to her blowing a vocal cord and she was told she would never sing again, but with the help of a vocal coach, she defied the odds and regained her voice.
With this being said, it wasn’t until 1983 that she released her first single, “Girls Just Want To Have Fun” which was originally written and performed by Robert Hazard in 1979, but Lauper made the song renowned four years later.
Furthermore, it is hard to miss the fun essence that she is, which her years of dying her hair and her many songs reflect incredibly well. Another well-loved song of hers is “Time After Time” released in 1983. It has been noted that it is a love song of devotion and the line “If you’re lost you can look and you will find me, time after time If you fall I will catch you, I’ll be waiting, time after time” definitely embodies the meaning of the song.
After the success of “Girls Just Want To Have Fun,” she pursued other endeavors while producing more music. That being said, she is known for her activism for LGBTQ+ rights and unwavering support for that community. Lauper is truly inspirational, as she has won awards from the Tonys, Emmys and Grammys, and has sold more than 50 million records.
Of course, there have been several other songs that have been truly desirable and mesmerizing, but these two classics will always be remembered and played anywhere and everywhere. Lauper is truly a magnetic inspiration and without a doubt, the eclectic, bold and spirited Cyndi Lauper has enchanted the world with her singing abilities.
