Athletes mentally preparing for upcoming spring sports

Some athletes have pre game rituals that other people know nothing about and they are more common than they might seem. Current NBA player, Dallas Maverick Jason Terry has been reported to eat chicken before every game and wear five pairs of socks while he plays.

Physical preparation includes running, lifting weights and exercising with their teammates.

“I started running track in 7th grade, and I continued because I genuinely like running,” sophomore Jade Heaviland said. “I run leading up to the spring track season, and before the first few days of practice and meets I tell myself it will be painful, and it will get easier and easier, I can get through this.”

During the 2015 track season, the girls track team bought shirts that said, “Track is a mental sport and we are all insane.” Not only is it true for the girls track team runners, it is also true for the guys, including senior Dylan Higgins.

When Higgins prepares for his 110 meter race, he has a little ritual: He looks down the track and tells himself that he can do it, he should do it for himself, not to make anyone else proud, and that it is only 110 meters, and he gets through it.

“Track has been an incredible experience for me, and if I could go back and do it all again I definitely would,” Higgins said.

As the spring sports season approaches, freshman baseball player Brandon Hamilton prepares himself.

“It is very important to stay focused on your sport,” Hamilton said. “Play whichever sport you love, and become great at it, be the best player you can be. Practice year round and enjoy what you do because if you don’t want to be there you won’t perform at the best of your ability.”

Some of the members on the girls soccer team do play all year round, going from club season right into conditioning for the outdoor school season.  One of these players is freshman Rachel Frazzini, who has been waiting in anticipation to start high school soccer.

“I am excited for the spring season because soccer has been my favorite sport since before I could remember,” Frazzini said. “Being a freshman starting high school soccer soon, it is important to start preparing by running on your free time so you are physically in shape. It is important to understand that you have to work as a team and self discipline.”

Cristiano Ronaldo, a forward who plays on the Real Madrid soccer team and the Portugal national team told the International Business Times he will not play a soccer game without getting a haircut first.
