The varsity girls’ basketball team is riding a wave as they just defeated Potterville in the first round of districts, winning 49-33 and beating Dansville in the second round by a score of 43-23. The girls are on a 5-game winning streak and are looking to continue their success into regionals against New Lothrop. The team has shown immense growth from last season, finishing with a regular-season record of 16-6 and second in the Big 8.
Senior Melina Sayre had mixed feelings going into their last couple of matches. “Going into the game, I was nervous and excited. I think I played decently, but I could’ve played better,” Sayre said. “I honestly think this is one of the team’s best seasons.”
Junior Bella Pybus felt some real pressure going into the games, but felt she played well.
“Going into the game, I really felt like we had to win because everybody expected us to win,” Pybus said. I think we played well, but we played more like a team in the second half. I think our season was okay, but we have improved a lot recently.”
After the district game, Junior Madeline Topping was excited to play New Lothrop. Even though she admitted that they were a game team, she thought they could beat them as long as they could keep 14 contained. After the game, they were happy as they did what they needed to do. “I feel like, as a team, we have been doing a good job playing together and working for each other. We have been good about not losing energy if we are down,” Topping said. “The want to win makes me nervous, knowing how much work we have put into it.”
The girls, unfortunately, concluded their season in the quarter finals against Pewamo-Westphalia, losing by a final score of 20-35. The girls had an incredible season and have absolutely no reason to hang their heads.
“It was a little nerve-racking but also very exciting because we did it further than we expected,” Senior Tayla Trapp said.
Trapp was happy with the way they played and the way the season went. “Although we didn’t have the outcome we wanted, we held them to the lowest point they scored all season and made them work for their win.
“We had nothing to lose going into the game, only something to prove. Everyone thought it was going to be a blowout,” Senior JayLee Chapman said.
Chapman was happy with the way their defense played, but thought the offense could have been better. “We played great defense, but some of our shots didn’t fall. We stayed in the game despite this fact.”
“I played well considering the ranked team we were playing against,” Chapman said.
