For the first time in program history, the varsity boys soccer team has won a district championship, capping off a season filled with growth, determination and a Big 8 conference title. The Panthers placed first in the Big 8 division and carried that win into the postseason to earn their first district title. Senior Gavin Suter credited the team’s improvement to experience and increased chemistry on the field.
“A couple of games were played better than last year,” Suter said. “I think because everyone last year was pretty new, but this year everyone actually knows what they’re doing a little more.”
Senior Daniel Villegas said the team has made significant progress since the start of the season.
“I think the season has gone pretty good,” Villegas said. “We have improved quite a bit from the start and a lot from last season.”
While the team made good progress offensively, players acknowledged there is still room for improvement on defense.
“I think we could have worked on making fewer silly mistakes on defense,” said senior Carlos Cervantes.
Villegas seemed to think otherwise, adding that while the defense has improved, players still need to work on attacking transitions.
“We improved quite a bit, mainly defensively,” he said. “We could still work a bit on joining the attack on the offense.”
Suter said changes in strategy helped the Panthers become more balanced on both ends of the field.
“We didn’t have a great plan with our positions at first, but we changed it throughout our games,” he said. “It helped us improve on saving goals and getting more goals.”
Throughout the season, these boys stayed focused and turned their team chemistry into results, making history in the process. The team hopes to continue building on this success next season.
