Color Craze

Kathryn Brumm

Color has the power to affect people more than they realize. “Color can affect the way you feel, you know, how you think about things, you know, people tend to associate colors with certain feelings so it’s important to pick colors that maybe represent your own personality,” art teacher Jay said.

Color has the ability to give life to things that would otherwise be considered bland. A simple change in color can change the whole feel of an outfit or a place.
Colors are associated with different feelings and activities. These are often determined by the occurrence of a color in nature and one’s location. Different colors affect people in different ways and have the power to influence attitudes.
“Bright colors, you know, they kind of boost my mood a little bit and make me more excited,” junior Dakoda Whitaker said.
If colors are associated with positive things, they will draw people in more often than colors that are associated with negative things. This can affect the choices that people make.
“Usually colors dictate a lot of decisions I make,” junior Stuart Cook said, “Like if somethings a weird color, we aren’t gonna eat it.”
The things that people associate with different colors are generally rooted in their childhood and their own experiences so everyone views them differently. However, there are general feelings and items that most people associate with each color.

Red

The color red is bold and attention-grabbing. It reminds people of dramatic and intense experiences because of its association with blood and injury. In nature, red is representative of heat and fire. Small bursts of red can inspire courage and power in people, but if they are surrounded by too much red can be overwhelming and make people angry.

Orange

Orange is a color of high energy. It is associated with Fall and its holidays, Halloween and Thanksgiving, because of pumpkins and the bright colors of fall foliage. Orange inspires strong feelings of like and dislike in those who see it and it is many people’s least favorite color. Because of this, it can inspire disgust. Flamboyance and determination are represented by orange.

Yellow

Happiness, sunshine and spring are all things that come to mind with the color yellow. People also associate yellow with the summer and fun time. It is generally a very positive color, though it does have a dark side. Yellow can also be representative of cowardice and betrayal. A color of caution, Yellow is seen in daily life in traffic lights and cautionary road signs.

Green

Due to being the most prevalent color in nature, green sparks thoughts of plants and the outdoors. Growth, renewal and energy are all things represented by the color green. People often buy plants in order to liven up a dead-feeling space. Green is a very lively and inspiring color but at the same time, it can be very calming. Green is also the color of money and is often used to represent feelings of greed and envy.

Blue

Blue is a very commonly liked color that is typically bracketed with the ocean and water. Blue is tranquil and serene. It is the color of the sky when it is bright or rain when the sky is gray. Blue embodies wisdom and understanding, but it is often also used in depictions of sadness which is how it is seen in media. When people are feeling sad, they might say that they are “feeling blue.” An attitude of coldness can be represented by the color blue because it is associated with the natural cold.

Violet

Violet is the color most associated with royalty and wealth. It is a grand and luxurious color that is highly valued due to its rarity in nature. You can find it in things like flowers and grapes but not much else. Violet inspires creativity and ambition in an environment. The power of purple can uplift people’s spirits and calm people down in small amounts.
