In an announcement sent out by superintendent Karl Heidrich, “Stockbridge Community Schools continues to follow the situation regarding Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) that is impacting geographical areas in Michigan.  At the time of this update, Ingham County does not have any human or animal cases of identified Eastern Equine Encephalitis.  EEE has also not been currently detected in Livingston and Washtenaw County. However, EEE has been found in three animals in Jackson County where the Jackson County Health Department has issued guidance and recommendations. The highest risk to the public is between 7pm and 7am.”

Since the location of our school buildings are within very close proximity to Jackson County, “We have decided to make scheduled start times earlier for our outdoor home game contests and any outdoor practices to best avoid peak mosquito times,” according to Heidrich.

The precautionary measure will be in place until the risk is reduced or the first frost of the year occurs.

Junior high principal Meghan Kunzelman is expected to notify families through the all call system of “any upcoming changes to outdoor extra-curricular and sporting events scheduled for both home and away contests until the risk has diminished,” Heidrich said.

Symptoms of EEE include fevers, chills and body and joint aches according to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. If you have any of these symptoms, the best thing to do is consult a doctor. The MDHHS also advises to wear sleeve shirts and pants when possible and put on mosquito spray when outdoors.
