Six in 30 students in your class are hoping that their stomachs don’t roar loud enough for you to hear them. Children in Michigan are in poverty. Three in 11 children are eligible for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program at their schools, according to Hunger Free Summer. At home, there is no special program to feed children. They ask, but their parents’ cabinets are bare, and a body can only last for so long.
In 2011, 20 percent of children were living in poverty according the Feeding America website. That means one in five classmates that surround a lunch table are hungry.
