Ah, February. The month of love and home of Valentine’s Day. In this edition, I would love to bring attention to one of my favorite old movies, a Canadian horror movie from 1981 called My Bloody Valentine. The movie takes place in a mining town in Canada called Valentine Bluffs, where an old legend warning against a Valentine’s dance isn’t respected. The legend proves true when Harry Warden, the villain of the story, and an old coal miner, comes to get revenge on them all for their disrespect. With respect to this movie (and the amount of human hearts shown in the film), I’m going to be making an anatomically correct, no-bake human heart Oreo cake!
Smell: 7/10
The dish, being frozen and not cooked, didn’t have a distinct smell to it. It was pleasant, and I’m happy that it at least didn’t smell bad. It simply smelled like Oreo and cream cheese for the most part, and then like raspberries for the plating.
Taste: 8/10
Tasting this dish was delicious, but definitely not my favorite. It was filled with sugar and very sweet, but not much else to comment on for taste. About as expected, but the raspberry preserves added an amazing pop of flavor.
Texture: 10/10
The cake was crunchy and creamy, a really good mix with the fondant adding a soft shell around it all. The jam and gel added a bit of moistness into the outside so that it didn’t harden too much.
Time/Effort: 10/10
It took A few hours for it to harden completely but other than that, the work was only about an hour and a half. Overall, the easiest recipe I’ve made so far.
Overall: 8.75/19
I really recommend this recipe for people that want a quick, easy recipe for a fairly good result!
On the Movie: A Recommendation
The movie “My Bloody Valentine” originally came out in 1981 and eventually even got a sequel in 2009 called “My Bloody Valentine 3D!” It remains in my heart alongside other cult classics like “Halloween” and “Friday the 13th.”
I really enjoy this movie and recommend it heavily to those who don’t mind a bit of gore. As stated before, it takes place in the coal mining town of Valentine Bluffs, where the mayor has reinstated a decades old tradition of their annual Valentine’s Day Dance, which was prior suspended for twenty years before when two supervisor’s of the mine left five people in the mines to attend. They thus forgot to check the methane levels in the mine and an explosion ocurred, causing a cave in that trapped all five.
Harry Warden was the only survivor, forced to feed on his dead peers to survive until he was found. The next year, he murdered the two supervisors and was sent away to a mental hospital after leaving a warning to never hold another Valentine’s dance. Low and behold, killings would begin happening as the mayor receives a human heart in a box.
