According to the NAQT, the fun yet nerve-wracking game of Quiz bowl consists of two teams competing head-to-head to answer questions from all areas of knowledge including history, literature, science, fine arts, and more. What makes quiz bowl different from other quiz-type games is the defining characteristic of players pressing a button and the ability to interrupt the question as it is read. But, being able to press buttons is not the only characteristic of quiz bowl, making lifelong friends and bonds makes it no different from any other team.
On January 13th, Stockbridge hosted a league match, welcoming over 11 teams into the school with pizza and a quick meet and greet before the three round schedule started.
16 year varsity coach Jay Langone and league president volunteered to help at the event. Langone, who loves coaching his own players to success and getting to know the students one on one recognizes the value in these meets.
“I was invited by the previous coach to help with reading the questions for a school match we were hosting. I thought it was really fun and interesting, plus I learned something new each time,” Langone said.
Quiz bowl is not only about answering questions, but helping others as well. Sophomore Annabelle Lane is on the high school quiz bowl team, but also attends that junior high meets to assist in keeping score and reading questions.
“I’m excited to help out the seventh and eighth graders with their meet,” Lane said.
Though Stockbridge didn’t win all three matches, JV coach Michelle Szilagyi, who has a deep passion for trivia and learning, thought that the match went well.
“Our league match was a big success,” Szilagyi said.
Szilagyi is very optimistic for the upcoming season and excited to watch her team grow in knowledge and as people.
Szilagyi isn’t alone when she states that quiz bowl is rewarding. Seventh grader Henry Marshall enjoys everything about quiz bowl.
“I plan on doing quiz bowl all throughout High School with my friends,” Marshall said.
