The Stockbridge High School Choir made the choice to go to the solo ensemble this year. The solo ensemble event was held on January 17th at Leslie High School.
Solo ensemble is an event put on by the Michigan State Vocal Music Association and is held annually for either solo singers or small ensembles to perform in front of a judge.
The group went as a way to get feedback before their district Choral festival.
“The judge had some very nice things to say about our performance, but they also offered some constructive criticism,” teacher Brian Gilbey mentioned. At solo ensemble, the choir team received a score of two.
Solo ensemble was not their only feedback. On February 21st, the choir class also went to their district choral festival located in Charlotte, performing “Moonrise, Outer Banks,” by Mark Patterson and “Cantar,” by Jay Althouse. Choir performances are scored from a range of one to five, where one is the highest and five is the lowest. At both performances, Stockbridge managed to clinch an almost perfect score of two. The group members not only got feedback on how they performed, but also on their sight reading where they are tested on their music reading skills.
“The judge wanted us to work on how we enunciate, so it was helpful knowing we tend to forget about that a lot,” senior Xavier Curtis said.
Nevertheless, receiving a two during both festivals made members excited. “We got a two for both our festivals and so that made it an even better experience for all of us,” sophomore Bella Glenn added.
