The varsity girls volleyball team had a rough start of the season by their own admission. They were hit with news that previous coach, Meghan Kunzelman, resigned from the position. This left the girls with the previous jv coach as their new varsity coach. Parents and players were left unsatisfied with this new decision. They expressed their concerns at a school board meeting and the next day coach Christina Villegas resigned. The girls were left without a coach once again. The athletic director had took matters into his own hands and filled in until they found a new volleyball coach.
After a week of Ernie being a fill in, new varsity girls volleyball coach Scott Pitcher, was accepted as the new varsity girls volleyball coach.
“We started off a little bit rocky due to some coaching issues,” senior Taylor Lockhart said. “But we finally got a good coach who really knows what he’s doing.”
Lockhart, along with many of her teammates, had some concerns about the coaching issues.
“You know, it kind of damaged our morale for a little bit. But with our new coach and all that we’ve accomplished so far with him. We’re really starting to build up our confidence again and we can once again accomplish really great things this season,” Lockhart said.
Pitcher mentioned that he feels good about where the team is right now as they continue to practice and get more comfortable with the new demands and expectations in the gym.
“A personal goal for myself is to help the athletes experience the best volleyball season ever,” Pitcher said. “Helping the athletes learn more about being healthy by teaching proper volleyball techniques and mechanics, how to implement stress reduction techniques to deal with challenges, and the importance of proper hydration and nutrition.”
Although Pitcher hasn’t been with the team for that long, he still has strong feelings for how the season is going so far for them.
“I have been with the team and program for three weeks now,” Pitcher said. “I have enjoyed getting to know all the players in the program and have had an opportunity to spend the practice time with all three teams and even cover coach JV,” Pitcher said. “The varsity team is doing very well to date. I’m sure they experienced a little culture shock, with my training and practice regiments,” Pitcher said.
“But they have been improving each day and doing a great job adjusting and adapting to the unique start of this season.”
Pitcher sees a great future for this season as he has many goals and wishes for the team.
“The team and program have great potential and I look forward to the opportunity to help these student athletes achieve their goals and exceed their expectations,” Pitcher said. “It would be great to get community support and reach new levels of success on and off the court.”
