Therapy dogs visit high school

Bonnie Barbick is in her sixth year working with therapy dogs. Therapy dogs Monroe, Rosalie and Adalind work with her at the high school and Quality Care, a senior center in Howell.

They are a part of the Go Team organization of crisis and airport dogs. They have hundreds of teams throughout the United States as well as overseas.

The dogs get trained to handle crisis situations and are trained to go through the airport. Though the dogs are all trained in a similar way, they do develop their own personalities and have a tendency to prefer different environments.

“Monroe likes a little bit higher energy so he’s happier here at the high school,” Barbick said. “The seniors are more gentle. Rosalie and Adalind will curl up on the couch with them and they love that.”

Monroe and Rosalie are both in their sixth years working as therapy dogs and Adalind is in her fifth. Recently, two new poodles have been introduced to their team and they have been trying to reintroduce the dogs to the elementary school.

“I have other team members that have been coming here with poodles Jake and Barrett,” Barbick said. “If I can get them involved it will be easier.”
