Located in Munith Park, a little yellow library sits under the pavillion. Take a seat at the table and enjoy a book. English teacher Jessica Martell plans to make use of the little library. “I was really excited to see it there, and I plan on making use of it over the summer,” Martell said.

Tucked under the pavilion in the Munith Park, a yellow painted Little Library pops up from the ground like a spring daffodil. It works by taking a book and leaving a book in its place.

Little Libraries are popping up more and more providing convenience and fun. Opening the door and seeing what books you can choose from and leaving a book for someone is all you have to do.

The idea of a Little Library was first brought to the attention of the Munith community by Stockbridge Area Wellness Coalition (SAWC) board member, Sue Wireman.

The SAWC paid for the materials such as plywood, pine for the trim, plexiglass for the door and the hardware to complete the project, while Wireman volunteered to make and install it.

It can be used for more than just taking and leaving a book. “The Little Library is a place for total experience if people want to use the location for passive recreation or as a place to study and learn,” according to community investment manager Matt Pegouskie.

The Little Library addition was part of a larger effort. The board planned other additions and renovations done to the park like the purchase of “new playground equipment, a new backboard and goal, replaced some swing sets, added a bike repair station and restored the picnic tables,” Pegouskie said.

The new bike repair station provides resources for anyone who does not have the tools at home. The station has the tools needed to fix up a bike, in a convenient spot: the park.

The Little Library attracts patrons of any age. “The idea for including it at the site was an effort to appeal to multiple users,” Pegouskie said.
