Principal secretary Lucy Learned works through the different piles of tasks organized on her desk. “There’s a lot of things to like about Mrs. Learned,” principal Richard Cook said. “I think my favorite thing is the way she’s so thoughtful. She thinks of things that I should be doing or that I should be saying and guides me in that way, and that’s because she’s got a huge heart.”

Office secretaries plan for retirement

June 9, 2017

June 30 will be the last day of work for principal secretary Lucy Learned, athletic secretary and assistant principal secretary Mary Carpenter and student services and counselor assistant Sandra Kay.

“We’re going out together,” Carpenter said. “It was time, 28 and a half years, and I felt it was time. It’s bitter sweet for me to leave, but I’m excited about my next step during retirement.”

According to principal Richard Cook, there will be two secretaries in the office, instead of three, starting the 2017-2018 school year because of financial difficulties, declining enrollment and the way technology allows for administrative assistants to work more efficiently.

“They’re adding 100 kids and going from three secretaries to two secretaries,” Kay said. “It just seems like I’m getting older and I’m having trouble doing some of the work.”

However, retirement will allow for Learned, Carpenter and Kay to pursue activities that they have had to put off before.

“First of all, I plan to do whatever I want, whenever I want,” Learned said. “Then I plan on spending more time with my grandchildren, and catching up on some things around the house that sometimes go undone, and then probably travel somewhat with my husband and just enjoy life.”
